AUG 28, 2007

Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society announced today that The Village of Burns Lake is the benefactor of the latest round of funding for four new projects. The NKDF Board approved a total of $127,945 for the projects on July 19, 2007.

NKDF Society chair Paul Stewart said, "We are pleased with the number of quality applications from the Burns Lake and Southside area."

The funds allocated will be used for town signage; energy saving enhancements in the Burns Lake Sport Centre arena; building improvements for the Lakes District Fall Fair Association; and the Burns Lake Band will receive funding assistance to develop the architectural and engineering documents for its exciting new Community House initiative.

"I’m happy to lend my support for these Burns Lake projects," said Bulkley Valley-Stikine MLA Dennis MacKAY. "The funding from NKDF will provide important funding to make improvements for local infrastructure and organizations."

Colleen Nyce, Alcan’s Manager of Corporate Affairs offered, “Congratulations to the proponents in the Burns Lake region for submitting a slate of projects that will work toward enhancing the tourism related image and increase cost effectiveness of economic generating and business facilities in the area”.

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society was jointly established in 1997 with a combined contribution of $15 million by the government of British Columbia and Alcan Inc. The Fund’s investment area includes lands impacted by the original Kemano project and focuses on those communities in the Nechako and Haisla regions of the north.

The Society encourages applications from local governments and legally incorporated non-profit organizations. NKDF invests in projects that create sustainable employment, diversify the economy, and improve the basic infrastructure needed for community stability, quality of life and growth.
