SEP 4, 2008

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society Board of Directors has approved funding for a number of projects in communities across the area, bringing the total approved amount for this fiscal to $487,343.

The successful projects approved are:

  • $61,938 for Kitamaat Village Council to build on existing assets to test market a variety of tourism experiences in the Haisla territories
  • $75,000 for Nechako View Senior Citizen’s Home Society to construct affordable housing units for seniors in Vanderhoof
  • $10,000 for the Burns Lake & District Chamber of Commerce to construct an electronic sign for use by all organizations in the Lakes area.

NKDF Society Chair Paul Stewart said, "Many quality applications come to our table for consideration and our Directors endeavor to ensure that funds are invested in projects that bring economic benefits to respective communities in the NKDF service area.  We welcome proposals from applicants on an ongoing basis.”

“The NKDF is a vital organization which understands the importance of stimulating tourism in the North,” says Bulkley Valley-Stikine MLA Dennis MacKAY.  “Investing in these innovative projects will provide more exciting opportunities for residents and visitors.”

“I’m pleased this funding will boost tourism while supporting Vanderhoof seniors,” says Prince George-Omineca MLA John Rustad.  “The NKDF recognizes the importance of investing in the prosperity of our communities, now and for the future.”

Rio Tinto Alcan’s Manager of Corporate Affairs & Community Relations, Colleen Nyce offers “Congratulations to the successful recipients of NKDFS funds. These are exactly the type of community projects that we envisioned would benefit from the money given by Alcan in 1997."

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society was jointly established in 1997 with a combined contribution of $15 million by the government of British Columbia and Alcan Inc. The Fund’s investment area includes lands impacted by the original Kemano project and focuses on those communities in the Nechako and Haisla regions of the north.

The Society encourages applications from local governments and legally incorporated non-profit organizations. NKDF invests in projects that create sustainable employment, diversify the economy, and improve the basic infrastructure needed for community stability, quality of life and growth.
